collaborative advocacy
I am definitely for HB-911 because it will now give more protection to all victims of strangulation under the O. C.G.A. 16-5-21, strangulation as aggravated assault. The statue covers all people who are assaulted but domestic assault is the worst there can be and it is killing 1 in 4 women in their lifetime and a victim of strangulation is 7x more likely to become a homicide victim (Gwinn & Strack, 2011). Domestic violence is an area advocacy will always be needed.
The two collaboration I could do is with the groups that work with the victims of abuse on a personal level. First, I would work with victims advocates at the Victims-Witness because they are working with victims that are looking to get there attacker brought to justice. They are either seeking Temporary Protective Orders, Victims Restitution or counseling. All of these things victims advocates are equipped to provide at the VWAP office. I feel social workers are suited for this job because we are abide by the NASW Code of Ethics. Victim-Advocates also are bound by a Code of Ethic which is very similar to the NASWs, so I see no conflicted in providing all the need services to the clients.
Secondly, I would work volunteer with Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (GCADV). I would chose them because they are already doing community outreach in their training section. HB-911 did not allot for any fund to train all the key stakeholders in the community such as Domestic Violence Organization (Shelters), Prosecutors, Victims Advocates, and Police Organization. The GCADV is a non-profit 501C3 that get fund so we could get materials from the Family Justice Center Alliance( the national leader in education and policy on strangulation) or get a specialized team from The Strangulation Institute tom come do train the trainer classes. Then as a volunteer I could go out and train others to raise help raise awareness (Gwinn & Strack, 2011).
